Swachh Bharat Mission is a large-scale mass movement whose effort is to make India clean by 2019. All rural and urban areas will be included in this mission.



Clean India Mission for Urban Areas

The mission aims to provide 2.5 lakh community toilets, 2.6 lakh public toilets, and a solid waste management facility in each city, targeting 1.04 crore households. Under this program, construction of community toilets in residential areas where it is difficult to construct individual household toilets. Public toilets will also be constructed at major places like tourist spots, ba sba1 jars, bus stations, railway stations. This program will be implemented in 4401 cities over a period of five years. Of the Rs 62,009 crore to be spent on the program, Rs 14623 will be provided by the central government. Of the Rs 14623 crore received by the central government, Rs 7366 crore will be spent on solid waste management, Rs 4,165 crore on individual household toilets, Rs 1828 crore on public awareness and Rs 655 crore on building community toilets. This program includes open defecation, conversion of unclean toilets into flush toilets, elimination of scavenging practices, municipal solid waste management and change in people's behavior in relation to healthy and hygiene practices etc.


Clean India Mission for Rural Areas

The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan program is a demand-based and people-centric campaign for the people in the rural areas, being run by the Government of India, to improve the hygiene habits of the people, generate demand for self-amenities and provide sanitation facilities, which will help the villagers To improve the standard of living.


The objective of the campaign is to make India a country free from open defecation in five years. Under the campaign, one lakh 34 thousand crore rupees will be spent for the construction of about 11 crore 11 lakh toilets in the country. Waste in rural India using technology on a large scale will be used to convert it into various forms of bio-fertilizer and energy, giving it the form of capital. In addition to the rural population and large sections of school teachers and students, the campaign has to be started at the war level, and the rural panchayat, panchayat samiti and zilla parishad across the country are also connected to it at every level.


As a part of the campaign, the unit cost of individual household toilets under each family unit has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 and includes hand washing, toilet cleaning and storage. The assistance from the government for such toilets will be Rs 9,000 and the state government will contribute Rs 3000. Assistance to Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast states and special status states will be 10800, in which the contribution of the state will be Rs. 1200. It would be acceptable to make additional contributions from other sources.

Swachh Bharat Clean School Campaign

  • Activities done during this period include-
  • During school classes, talk with the children every day on various aspects of cleanliness and hygiene, especially the teachings related to Mahatma Gandhi's hygiene and good health.
  • Cleaning class, laboratory and libraries etc.
  • Talking about the contribution of any idol established in the school or the person who founded the school and cleaning these idols.
  • Cleaning toilets and areas with drinking water.
  • Cleaning the kitchen and stuff planet.
  • Cleaning the playground
  • Maintenance and cleaning of school gardens.
  • Annual maintenance of school buildings with dyeing and painting.
  • Organizing competitions on essays, debates, painting, cleaning and hygiene.
  • Forming a monitoring team of child cabinets and monitoring the cleanliness drive.

Besides, spreading the message of cleanliness and good health by organizing film shows, essays / paintings on cleanliness and other competitions, plays etc. The ministry has also proposed to start a half-hour cleaning drive twice a week involving students, teachers, parents and community members of schools.
